Kirkwood Ski Resort, California Hot

Kirkwood_Mountain_ResortKirkwood Ski Resort, located in Lake Tahoe boasts some of California’s best skiing. The base of the resort is located at 7,800 feet, making it the highest starting point of any resort in Tahoe.

The massive 2,300-acre resort offers a 2,000-foot drop and numerous runs for skiers of all skill sets. The resort is situated in the mountains and catches the best snowstorms being pushed into the Sierra. Because of this the resort was open 200 days in 2010 and only needs to make 5% of its snow.

Kirkwood offers many services including lessons, private lessons, cross-country skiing and ‘cat’ expeditions. They have kids and adult specific lessons so first timers above the age of 12 wont be embarrassed shredding the bunny hill with little kids. While Kirkwood offers plenty of advanced and expert runs, it is also a great place for beginners. Part of the hill is partitioned for beginners, including chairlifts. This keeps the beginners separated from the advanced skiers—a breath of fresh air for both.

The resort offers roughly 100 condos within walking distance from the lifts. If you aren’t lucky enough to snag a condo, South Lake Tahoe and it’s 20,000 hotel rooms is just a short drive away. Kirkwood does not offer RV and Camper services.

For interested snowboarders, Kirkwood offers a youth snowboarding park with a mini-half pipe, banked turns and a small tunnel. There is also an adult park that shows off a 22-foot half-pipe.

Mountain Stats:

  • -Annual Snowfall—600”
  • -15% of runs are considered ‘expert’
  • -12 lifts
  • -Longest Run—2.5 miles
  • -Highest Elevation—9800 ft.
  • -Lift Ticket—Adult: $76, Youth: $60, Child: $19, Senior Citizen:  $49

With 600 inches of annual snow, a high elevation and 2300 acres of skiable terrain, Kirkwood seems like Mother Nature created it to be skied on. You won’t find Tahoe’s big, blue lake here but you won’t find high-rises and traffic, either. Kirkwood is a great option for your next trip to the Tahoe area.
