SIA building2011's SIA snow show was held at the Colorado Convention CenterMarking one of the most successful tradeshows yet for the Snowsports Industries America group, the 2011 SIA Snow Show wrapped up today, Sunday January 30th in Denver, Colorado.

After a 19-year running in Las Vegas, Nevada, the show moved to Denver last year. While some complained that Denver wasn’t exciting enough, most industry persona disagreed.

Denver has morphed in the last 20 years itself, from an up-and-coming, somewhat sleepy Midwestern city to a thriving arts capital and entertainment center of the West

Not only has Denver become a city with more going on and a world-class convention destination with the Colorado Convention Center and it’s famous Blue Bear staring through the window at visitors, but the Rocky Mountains out Denver’s backdoor have been getting pounded with snow. The area has received several inches of new snow in the last two weeks.

It’s a natural fit for the largest snow sports industry trade show in the country to be in the state with arguably the best powder skiing in the country. “Our second year shaped up really well with a sold out show,” says SIA president David Ingemie. “Retail registration is up over last year and the number of exhibitors for both the Snow Show at the Colorado Convention Center and the On-Snow Demo/Ski-Ride Fest at Winter Park Resort and Devil’s Thumb Ranch are also up significantly. Plus, all the great snow we’ve seen this season has led to very strong sales at retail.”

The show features snow sports representatives, manufacturers, suppliers and media from around the world.

It is predominantly a retail buyers show but also serves as an industry clearing house and four-day snow sports industry networking event and party. Retailers, manufacturers, company reps, pros, and other industry personalities come together to learn about and witness the latest industry trends, particiSIA snow show logopate in educational seminars, sit in on sales presentations, and let loose at industry parties, happy hours and concerts.

The highlight of this year’s party scene was the Icelantic skis concert at Denver’s Ogden Theater featuring Big Boi, from the well-known hip-hop group Outkast. In the words of one veteran marketing manager, “It was epic.” DJ Mike D of Beastie Boys fame was also mixing it up and drawing huge crowds at the SkullCandy booth on Saturday night.

Participants are viewing lines and preparing orders for the 2011-2012 winter season. It is often times people’s only chance to see next years goods—and meet the people behind their creation—before making important buying decisions for the following season.

Also at the show is the presentation of the 2010 SIA Retailers of the Year and Reps of the Year Award winners. Other industry events of note were the Innovations, Now exhibit featuring next season’s most important technological innovations; the Reclaim Project, pitting up-and-coming designers head to head in a design competition emphasizing environmental awareness in materials and design; and the industry kickoff party Snowdown featuring five stages and performers including headliner Z-Trip.
