15-Year Canadian Ski Team Member, Britt Janyk, Retires

janykAlpine Canada and the Canadian Ski Team are losing Britt Janyk, one of its most tenured racers, to retirement.

After a 15-year run with the national team, Janyk is calling it quits at the age of 30.

Janyk first suited up for Canada in 1996 at the tender age of 15, and in the past decade-and-a-half has built quite a racing resume.

The number 15 is special, not just as the number of years Janyk skied for Canada, but also because it represents the number of Canadian National Championships the North Vancouver skier earned in her career.

Other top finishes include winning the World Cup downhill in 2007 and a sixth place downhill finish in her native Vancouver at the 2010 Winter Olympics. Whistler Mountain, where all 2010 Olympic Alpine events occurred, is the very same mountain where Janyk grew-up skiing.

Fittingly, Vancouver was Janyk’s first and last Olympic competition.

In total, Janyk participated in nine World Cup seasons, took one victory and reached the podium twice. Add another 18 top-ten finishes on the World Cup circuit and it’s fair to say Janyk represented her country well both at home and abroad.

During her official retirement statement, Janyk said, “The decision was a very difficult one to make because I still really love the sport and I love ski racing.”

“There’s a part of me that would still like to continue. But at the same time, I just feel ready to move on,” she added.

Janyk comes from a long line of skiers in her family. Her grandfather was involved in installing some of the first ski lifts at Whistler Mountain and her mother is a ski instructor. Most notably, her brother Michael is a member of the Canadian Men’s Ski Team – a bronze medal winner in slalom at the 2009 World Championships.

Experts agree that Britt’s retirement was not a shock to the skiing community as recent poor results on the world stage indicated that her career was likely to end.
