Powderhorn Sells at Auction for $1.4 Million

PowderhornPowderhorn Ski Area in Mesa, Colorado sold at an auction for $1.4 million to former Vail Resorts executive Andy Daly and his partners on Thursday.

The deal, crafted by Daly and Real Estate partners Tom and John Gart, of the Gart Companies, includes controlling interest in the Powderhorn Resort as well as more than 700-acre parcel of nearby land that could be further developed.

"We really believe Powderhorn is a wonderful gem that has been undercapitalized for a number of years. We want to bring back skiing expertise and capital," Daly said.

Daly called Powderhorn "a diamond in the rough" and said he plans to make some small improvements to the lifts and snowmaking equipment. Additionally they intend to add a tubing park before the upcoming ski season.

"I think we made a pretty good deal and I see a lot of potential in it." Daly added, "Unfortunately over the years the two families that have owned Powderhorn did not have the capital to invest in keeping it current in a competitive market. We firmly believe that with a little bit of investment and some focus on the service side (everything from on-mountain grooming and developing the terrain parks to the food quality and guest services) we can have a pretty big impact on the market."

The family-friendly resort is a 45-minute drive from Grand Junction and four hours from Denver. It features a modest 1,600 skiable acres and a 1,650-foot vertical drop.

The ski area attracts an estimated 75,000 skiers and snowboarders annually.
