Aspen Skiing Company Hires First Female Manager Hot

Susan_CrossThe Aspen Skiing Company appointed its first ever female manager Thursday, when it named Susan Cross as Buttermilk mountain manager.

While this announcement is an historical moment within the skiing community, Aspen Skiing Company picked Cross for the Buttermilk position not because she was a female candidate, but because she was the “best person for the job,” said Aspen Skiing spokesman Jeff Hanle.

“We are excited to welcome Susan to Buttermilk,” said Rich Burkley, Aspen Skiing Company Vice President of Operations.  “She brings a strong fundamental knowledge of mountain operations to her new position. She is creative and innovative and incorporates fun and a passion for our winter sports in her management style.”

As the manager of Buttermilk mountain, Cross will oversee all day-to-day operations as well as work with ESPN for the Winter X-Games.

“I'm excited to take on new challenges,” Cross said in a statement. “I look forward to working with the staff at Buttermilk, continuing the success of the X Games, and learning all the ins and outs of a new mountain.”

Cross has been with Aspen Skiing Company since 1992.
