Top American Snowboarder to Race for Russia? Hot

122210_RacetotheCup_t620Vic Wild, one of the United States’ most gifted snowboarders, as well as husband to Russia’s world champion in parallel slalom, Alyona Zavarzina, allegedly has expressed a desire to compete for the Russian national team, according to the Russian skiing and snowboarding federation.

“Currently we are preparing the papers to be admitted to the Russian citizenship. It’s hard to say now how long it will take,” Leonid Melnikov told the Sport-Express newspaper.

“We are very interested in this athlete. He would add more competitiveness within the team. We know him as a professional and disciplined guy,” said Melnikov.

“If he wasn’t married to Alyona Zavarzina we wouldn’t have taken the initiative. But things went this way. Besides, the athlete himself wants to compete for Russia,” he added.

“I’d like to point out that he has already started learning Russian. I guess the issue of Vic’s citizenship will be solved before the New Year at best,” Melnikov concluded.

In order for Wild to obtaining Russian citizenship, he must first receive the approval of the President’s Commission.

Wild, 25, has finished in the top three at the North American Cup several times. He also finished 10th at the World Snowboard Championships in parallel giant slalom last year.
